FAQ for Parents and Carers

Does my child need Speech and Language Therapy?

It’s natural for parents and carers to feel concerned or unsure about whether their child needs speech and language support. When signs aren’t always obvious, or you’re unsure what’s typical at their age, it can be difficult to know if extra help is needed or if development is simply unfolding in its own time. What types of speech and language difficulties do you support?

We support various communication needs, including:

  • Speech sounds: Difficulty saying specific sounds, speaking clearly, or using the correct sounds in words e.g., may be able to make the sound ‘k’ on it’s own but says “tat” for cat.

  • Language: Difficulty understanding what they hear, following directions, or asking and answering questions.

  • Phonological skills: Difficulty learning, producing and blending sounds, having limited awareness of rhyme, syllables

  • Morphology and syntax: Difficulty formulating sentences, using grammar correctly, or using word endings correctly.

  • Vocabulary and word finding: Limited vocabulary and difficulty finding words

  • Social communication: Difficulties self-advocating, understanding others’ thoughts and feelings (perspective taking) and problem solving.

  • Fluency: Difficulty with speech fluency, such as stammering and cluttering.

  • We also support children who need or would benefit from alternative and augmentative communication (aac). (AAC) encompasses a variety of strategies and tools designed to support individuals who face challenges with speech. These can range from signing, simple letter and picture boards to advanced computer-based systems. AAC empowers individuals to communicate effectively across diverse situations, enhancing their ability to connect with others and express their thoughts and needs.
